The clinician recommended medication and I'm terrified

The doctor says ADHD medication could help with focus and regulation. But my mom says it's addictive, a Facebook group says it's overprescribed to control kids, and a Reddit thread says it ruined someone's life.

I trust the clinician's judgment. I'm also terrified of getting this wrong.

If you've gone the medication route — for yourself or your child — what was your actual experience? Not scaremongering, not toxic positivity. Just real. What should I know before we start?

Totally fair to be scared — and the noise online makes it worse. Medication is one tool among several, started low and monitored, not a permanent verdict. We can share real experiences here, but the dosing conversation belongs with your prescriber. For those who tried it: what surprised you, good or bad?

For me it wasn't a personality change, just turning the background noise down a notch. We started tiny and adjusted. The scary stories online were nothing like my actual experience — but it's individual, so go slow with your doctor.
