How do I explain ADHD or autism to my child without making them feel broken?

Use language that separates difference from defect. Something like: 'Your brain works differently, and that means some things are harder and some things may come naturally. Our job is to understand your brain and build supports around it.' Children often remember the emotional tone more than the exact words, so calm and matter-of-fact helps.

The label didn't change who you are โ€” it gave you better instructions for the person you already were.

Thank you for putting this into words. Quietly bookmarking for my own hard days.
