Breaking the stigma: ADHD & autism awareness in India

Why labels like 'problem child' and 'slow learner' persist in India — and how families push back.

In much of India, neurodivergence is still read through an old lens: a 'problem child,' a 'slow learner,' or 'bad parenting.' That mindset delays diagnosis and isolates families.

Where the stigma comes from

  • Invisible disability — no outward marker, so behaviour gets moralised.
  • Limited public awareness and outdated school training.
  • Fear of marriage and social prospects driving secrecy.

What shifts it

Plain, repeated, non-defensive explanation — 'this is how their brain is wired' — plus visible examples of neurodivergent people doing well. Change is slow, but it's happening, especially among younger families.

You are not responsible for fixing a whole culture's awareness. You're responsible for protecting one child inside it.
