An affirming clinician can make care feel safe; a dismissive one can do lasting damage. You're allowed to vet, and to leave.
Questions worth asking
- 'What's your experience with neurodivergent patients?'
- 'Are you comfortable adapting how we communicate?'
- 'Do you see my neurology as something to support or to fix?'
A script for switching
I don't think this is the right fit for my care. Could you transfer my records to [provider]? Thank you for your time.
Red flags
- Dismissing your reported experience
- Insisting on 'normal' behaviour as a goal
- Refusing simple communication accommodations
Leaving a provider who doesn't fit isn't being difficult — it's good self-advocacy. You don't owe anyone your continued discomfort.
