The first email sets the tone for the year. Make it short, human, and easy to answer — and you'll build a line of communication you can use when it matters.

Hi [family], I'm [name], [student]'s teacher this year, and I'm really glad they're in our class. Before things get busy: what's one thing that helps [student] have a good day, and one thing I should know? No need for a long reply — a sentence is perfect.
Asking for 'one thing' instead of a form gets you a reply and a relationship. You can go deeper once trust exists.
