Many Indian parents don't know their child has a legal right to be in a mainstream classroom — with support. Two laws back you up.
The two laws to know
- RTE Act (2009) — the right to free education in mainstream schools.
- RPWD Act (2016) — recognises autism and ADHD, and requires reasonable accommodations and non-discrimination.
Turning rights into reality
- Put your accommodation request in writing, citing the RPWD Act.
- Ask for a specific, named plan — who does what, and when.
- Keep records of every request and reply.
- If refused, escalate calmly to the principal, then the district authority.
A school saying 'we don't do that here' is not the final word. The law is. A polite, written, rights-based ask is hard to ignore.
