Understanding the autism grief cycle in families

Everyone's path differs in order and intensity — and that's exactly what's normal.

Two parents in the same house can be in completely different places — one researching furiously, one not ready to talk. Neither is doing it wrong.

When partners grieve differently

  • Name it out loud: 'We're processing this at different speeds, and that's okay.'
  • Don't make one person's pace the 'correct' one.
  • Find one shared, concrete next step you can both stand behind.

Kids and siblings have their own version of this cycle too. Give the whole family room to feel it in their own order.

The goal isn't to grieve in sync. It's to keep talking while you each find your footing.
