You're allowed to ask for what helps without narrating your whole neurology. Accommodations are about function — frame the need, name the fix, skip the diagnosis story if you want to.

The frame that works

To do my best work, I need [specific support]. Could we put that in place? Happy to discuss what works on your end.

By type

  • Noise: 'I focus best with headphones / a quieter spot for deep work.'
  • Communication: 'Could you send agendas/asks in writing? I process detail better that way.'
  • Time: 'I do my best work with a day's notice on changes where possible.'

If HR pushes back

Ask for the reason in writing, and frame the accommodation as a performance enabler. You can disclose a diagnosis later if needed — you don't have to lead with it.

'What I need to do great work' is a stronger opening than 'what's wrong with me.' Same request, better footing.
