Autistic burnout: signs, causes, recovery

How burnout differs from ordinary stress — and what recovery actually requires.

Ordinary stress eases with a weekend. Autistic burnout doesn't — because its roots are chronic sensory overload, social demand, and the emotional toll of masking, not just a busy week.

Telling them apart

  • Stress lifts with rest; burnout persists despite it.
  • Burnout brings skill regression — losing abilities you reliably had.
  • Burnout flattens interests and raises sensory sensitivity.

What recovery needs

Real reduction in demands, sustained low-stimulation rest, and time — often a lot of it. Short fixes don't touch it because the cause isn't short-term.

If a 'normal' break didn't help, that's a clue it's burnout, not tiredness — and a sign to change the load, not the weekend.
