Building executive-function scaffolding (without an app graveyard)

What actually helps long-term — in plain language, minus the productivity hype.

Most of us have a graveyard of abandoned productivity apps. The problem usually isn't the tool — it's that the system demanded more executive function than it gave back.

Principles that outlast apps

  • Externalise everything — if it's only in your head, it doesn't exist.
  • Reduce steps, don't add features. The best system is the one you'll actually use tired.
  • Make the next action stupidly small and visible.
  • Build around your real patterns, not the patterns you wish you had.

A test for any new system

Could you use it on your worst-functioning day? If it only works when you're already organised, it's decoration, not scaffolding.

Pick one tool. Use it badly for a month before adding anything. Boring and consistent beats clever and abandoned.
