There's no universally right answer to disclosure — only the right answer for your role, your manager, and what you actually need. Walk it, don't agonise it.
Work through these in order
- Do I need an accommodation right now? If no, disclosure is optional.
- Can I get what I need by describing the need, without a label? If yes, try that first.
- Is my manager/HR likely to respond well? Gather evidence before deciding.
- What's my downside if it goes poorly — and can I cushion it?
You can also disclose in layers: a need first, more detail only if required. Partial disclosure is a legitimate choice.
Disclosure is reversible in only one direction. It's fine to move slowly and keep the next step in your pocket.
