A good fit is worth the search. An affirming therapist treats your neurology as a difference to work with, not a defect to fix.
Ask in a first call
- 'What's your experience with autistic / ADHD adults?'
- 'Do you see neurodivergence as something to support or to correct?'
- 'Are you open to accommodations in how we work — pacing, format, lighting?'
Green flags
- Curiosity about your experience
- Comfort with stimming and directness
- Willingness to adapt their style
Red flags
- Framing your traits as things to eliminate
- Pushing eye contact or 'normal' social performance
- Dismissing burnout or masking as excuses
It's okay to interview a therapist. A good one expects it and respects it.
