Autistic burnout isn't ordinary tiredness. It's exhaustion plus skill loss plus reduced tolerance, driven by sustained masking and overload. Recovery is real — and slower than anyone wants.

What helps

  • Radically reducing demands and masking, not just 'self-care' on top of a full load.
  • Sensory rest — genuine low-stimulation time, daily.
  • Reconnecting with special interests, with zero pressure to be productive.
  • Lowering expectations of yourself, on purpose, without guilt.

What doesn't

  • Pushing through
  • More structure piled on an empty tank
  • Treating it as ordinary stress to be powered past
Recovery is measured in months, sometimes years. Going gently isn't giving up — it's the only thing that actually works.
